The initial idea for this index came while using Mike Ashley's The Complete Index to Astounding/Analog (Robert Weinberg Publication, & William Contento's Index to Science Fiction Anthologies and Collections (G.K. Hall & Co., 1978) to organize my sf collection.

Much of the information for the tables in this index came directly from the source, the F&SF and VSF magazines themselves. The tables of contents supplied the information used for the people behind the magazines, and the history of the magazines front sections. Non-fiction pieces, such as notes from the editor, 'In this issue . . . ,' 'Coming soon . . . ,' and story introductions supplied invaluable material for the Comments fields. And lastly, I went through every page of every issue to make sure I left out nothing in the Stories and Authors Tables.

Author bibliographic & biographic information, and novella & novel descriptions, used in the Comments fields, have been taken mainly from John Clute & Peter Nicholl's The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction & Clute & John Grant's The Encyclopedia of Fantasy (St. Martin's Press, 1993 and 1997, respectively), and William L. DeAndrea's Encyclopedia Mysteriosa (Macmillan, 1997).

Information on pseudonyms were gleaned mainly from Pat Hawk's Hawk's Authors' Pseudonyms II (2nd edition, 1995), and from various online sources.

Information on individual stories (e.g., story type & where they were originally published) and anthology information were culled from using Mike Ashley & William G. Contento's The Supernatural Index (Greenwood Press, 1995), Stephen T. Miller & Contento's Science Fiction, Fantasy, & Weird Fiction Magazine Index, 1890-1997 (1998 CD-ROM), Contento's Index to Science Fiction Anthologies and Collections, Combined Edition (1996, 1997; 1998 CD-ROM; online edition at ), and Charles N. Brown & Contento's The Locus Index: Science Fiction, Fantasy, & Horror: 1984-1996 (1996,1997; 1998 CD-ROM; online edition at same web site address).

Award information was taken from Aurel Guillemette's The Best in Science Fiction (Scolar Press, 1993), and Al von Ruff's Internet Speculative Fiction Database (ISFDB for short, online edition at ).

Information used in the Asimov Science Essay tables (which are not yet completed) were partly taken from F&SF's November 1978 issue, as well as from each of his essays, from Random House Webster's Dictionary of Scientists (Random House, 1997), and from the Isaac Asimov Home Page at .
