September 2002
|
Editorial - September 2002 Since we emphasize words over pictures and usually have just one illustration, our digest format doesn't allow us many opportunities to work with new artists. The July cover depicting a a jouster and a dragon was a rare exception---that piece was the work of a new Australian artist named Shane Parker. Anyway, a few months back, Ron Walotsky mentioned that last time he taught art at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida, he gave his students an assignment of illustrating an F&SF story ("The Island in the Lake," I think it was) and then he showed them the cover illustration he created. Why not try it again? So I sent Ron an advance copy of "The Majesty of Angels" and of the eighteen pieces of art that resulted, we selected the work (at right) of Jenny Kerr, an undergraduate from Taylor Mill, Kentucky. Several of the other pieces gave it good competition---you can see all the work by Ron's students on our Website at www.fandsf.com. It's interesting to note how the professional painting we commissioned, David Hardy's fine work on our front cover, incorporates almost all of the same elements that the students picked out. ---GVG Click on a painting to see a larger version. |
